Julie Zats, 20, is a sophomore at Harper College in Chicago, where she's studying dental hygiene. But outside of class, she spends hours on a hobby that's completely unrelated to her course work: Hula hooping.
Inspired by performers she saw at music festivals, Zats pulled from her experience as a competitive hip-hop dancer to experiment with new tricks and choreography. She used a Toys 'R' Us hoop until she convinced her parents she was serious enough for a fancy LED version.
Armed with the proper equipment, which can cost upward of $300, Zats began to broadcast her skills on Instagram, using hashtags like #hoopersofinstagram and #hoopla to increase her following within a relatively small but devoted subculture that sets out to make LED hoop lights look extra rad.
Watch more of the ~*hypnotizing*~ moves Zats showed off on a recent trip to Cosmopolitan.com's HQ, where she freestyled LIKE A BOSS for hours:Julie is wearing a Black and Red Mesh Sports Bra, ALALA, $65, Black High Rise Leggings, UNDER ARMOUR, $45.
